Semi-bluffing with a Flush Draw?

Type of Game: Limit Texas Hold'em, Tournament, $50/$100 blinds.
Your Cards: Ks-Js
Your Position: Button

Scenario: It’s the middle stage of the tournament and you have an average sized chip stack. There are no short stacks at your table. A middle position player raises, a player in late position calls, and you call from the button. The blind both fold their hands. There is $750 in the pot and three players still in the hand. The flop shows Qs-7s-3c, giving you four cards to the flush and an overcard. The player who raised before the flop bets, the late position player folds. What do you do in this situation? Fold, call, or raise?

Our answer: You should raise in this situation. You make a so called semi-bluff, where you probably don’t have the best hand at the moment, but have many outs to improve. This is an effective strategy in a tournament as well as in a cash game. However, this play is extra strong in tournaments since players are generally more cautious in these types of games. If you get called and then checked to on the turn, you have the option of taking a free card, and maybe hit your flush, or top pair, on the river.
