Different Types of Poker Explained
Poker is a popular card game enjoyed by many, but what a lot of people do not know is that poker is not a singular game. Instead, it is a collection of games each with its own set of rules. The two most common versions are Poker and Texas Holdem, with Draw and Stud Poker completing the set.
Each of these versions can be played by two or more players with the same goal of making the best possible hand to claim the pot. Draw and stud poker is the more old-fashioned varieties, however, in recent times Texas Holdem and Poker have become more popular.
The Similarities Between the Different Types of Poker
Regardless of the type of poker you play, there are a few consistencies between them that will make it easier to switch between options. We have already mentioned that it needs to be played with two or more people. The next thing is the ante, which is the minimum wager required by each player to participate. This is the bet everyone needs to place to start the round.
Once the round has started players can bet, check, call or raise. Most of the hand rankings are the same between the games, however, the methods used to play will differ.
The Differences Between the Different Types of Poker
Community poker games such as Texas Holdem require players to be dealt a certain number of cards or holes that stay in their hand. These cards then need to be matched with the community cards on the table. This will create a five-card hand.
Keeping our focus on Texas Holdem, each player receives two-hole cards. Three community cards, or the flop, are dealt and the second round of bets will commence. Two more cars will be deal with betting rounds in between. The players still in the game will then show their cards to determine a winner.
Omaha is like Texas Holdem, except each player has 4-hole cards that need to be matched with the community cards, although only two need to be utilised. Pineapple is another similar game although it involves three-hole cards that can be discarded before the game starts.
Draw poker games have players receive their full hand and do not have access to community cards. Players can, however, trade in the cards to receive new cards. It can be played as five-card draw, seven-card draw and double-draw.
Stud poker on the other hand has players dealt a certain number of cards that cannot be traded or used with community cards – players need to play with the hand that they have been dealt. Most of the cards will be dealt face up with the last one facing the table. Games include five-card stud, seven-card stud and razz, the latter of which looks to make the lowest hand possible. Mississippi stud is played the same as seven-card stud, except the last card is dealt face up.
